Microsoft Office Picture Manager Opens Slowly

I ran into a problem a few weeks back where I would try to open an image attachment from an e-mail, and it would take forever to actually open up. The splash screen for Microsoft Office Picture Manager would appear, but then seem to hang. After some time it would eventually open, but something was definately wrong.

I searched all over the web for a fix, and finally found the answer in Google Groups. My hunch about something to do with an MRU (most recently used) list was correct. Picture Manager maintains an MRU list in an XML file. If one of those locations is no longer valid, or is on a slow link, Picture Manager will appear to hang.

To fix this issue browse to %userprofile%\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\OIS. Locate the file named OIScatalog.cag, and double-click on it. When asked what you want to open the file with choose Notepad from the list. When it opens you will see a file that looks like the following. Remove any lines that start with mru path. Make sure to remove the entire line including the opening/closing tags. You can also just delete the OIScatalog.cag file, and it will be re-created the next time you open a picture.

Save the file, and then try opening another picture. It should now open much more quickly and all of your headaches will disappear.

Finally it boils down that every time you open a picture from a remote share, and later that share is no longer available, Picture Manager will hang while opening.

That is real crappy code..

At 2:51 PM, Anonymous JD said...

Thanks, I had to delete the complete file, and all problems where solved.

Worked beautifully! Thanks for posting this on your blog!

At 11:26 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

My prob turned out to be a picture I'd opened from a networked laptop that wasn't always on-line. In addition to checking for MRU's, check all your Collection Paths. If you find one that links to a networked CPU, delete that line entirely.

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!

At 4:20 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Yes it's working - this is the cause!

There was a network path in that file. I've just delete it and the Picture Manager opens normally.

Thank you!

Someone here might have mentioned that this folder path is hidden by default on XP machines. Users should go into tools/folder options/View and then "check" the Show hidden files and folders itme BEFORE looking for this file.

Also you can use the search function to find this file. Even though I "unhid" files, still couldn't find it w/o doing the search.

I would like to see a calculation of how many hours of productivity worldwide have been lost due to this and other M$ bugs.

hello,

so i've found a not so elegant but workable and relatively 'set and forget' fix for this annoying problem that m$ should have solved with a bloody 'delete history' or something button in the software long ago... < whew' >. i'm sorry though that i only know how to apply it in xp professional...

just navigate to the "ois\OIScatalog.cag file", right-click\properties\security tab (make sure you are not using "simple file sharing") and DISABLE WRITE PERMISSIONS ON THAT FILE FOR YOU AND SYSTEM AND WHICHEVER OTHER USER WANTS TO KEEP THEIR PRIVACY PRIVATE !

that's all. picture manager will no longer be able to add data to the xml file and therefore will not be able to append new mru stuff.

not so elegant, but so far has been getting the job done :).

god i hate stupid idiotic time wasting foolishness like this... all they need to do is include a BUTTON for krice sake- jeez.

well bye !

Microsoft Picture Manager was taking nearly 3 minutes to open small 100KB .jpg .jpeg .bmp and .gif files. This was exactly what I needed. Follow the path exactly and make sure the "View" is set for system files and for viewing all known file extensions. I did an extended search to find this file .. then I renamed the original so that the system would create a new "OIScatalog.cag" file. By renaming these two files I can turn on and off Microsoft Picture Manager's good and poor performance. Our IT dept did not know how to fix this. I ended up telling them how to fix the problem thanks to "techtips".

I created a command to delete the file to auto delete it everytime I log in. Very easy!

1) Open notepad.exe
2) now copy and paste the following into notepad.exe:

del "%userprofile%\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\OIS\OIScatalog.cag"

3) Save as: fixMS_picture_mngr.cmd

Note: it must be saved with the file extention ".cmd" as above to run correctly.

4) Finally, copy it to:

%userprofile%\Start Menu\Programs\Startup

I hope this helps someone!
